Listed below are artist movements that helped inspire the working process for New High Renaissance.
*High Renaissance: [ 1450 to 1520 ]
Italian Renaissance patrons wanted art that showed joy in the human beauty and life pleasures.
Renaissance is more lifelike then in the art of the Middle Ages. Renaissance artists studied perspective,
or the differences in the way things look when they are close to something or far away. The artists
painted in a way that showed their differences. As a result, their paintings seem to have depth.
Renaissance was a form of art that removed the extraneous detail and showed the world as it
was. Forms, colors, and proportions, light and shade effects, harmony, composition,
perspective, anatomy- all was handled with total control and a level of accomplishment for which
there are no real precedents. Great Renaissance artist are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo,
Raphael and Titian.
*Realism: [ 1850 - 1880 ]
Realism sets a goal not imitating past artistic achievements but the truthful and accurate depiction
of the models that nature and contemporary life offer to the artist. New idea was that ordinary people
and everyday activities are worthy subjects for art. Artist- Realists attempted to portray the lives,
appearances, problems, customs of the middle and lower classes, of the unexceptional,
the ordinary, the humble, and the unadorned. Well known Realist artist: John William Waterhouse, Sir
John Everett Millais, Marie Rosalie Bonheur and Edgar Degas
*Romanticism: [ Late 18th Century to mid 19th Century ]
Romanticism might best be described as anticlassicism a reaction against Neoclassicism, it is a
deeply-felt style which is individualistic, exotic, beautiful and emotionally wrought. Great artists closely
associated with Romanticism include Casper David Friedrich, John Constable, J.M.W. Turner and
William Blake.
*New Realim: [ Founded in October 1960 ]
The term [ New Realism ] was forged by Pierre Restany during an early group exhibit in May 1960.
By returning to " Realism " as a category, he was referring to the 19th Century artistic and literary
movement which aimed to describe ordinary everyday reality without any idealization, yet , this new
realism was " new " , in the sense that it connects itself to the new reality depriving from an urban
consumer society and its descriptive mode is also new because it is no longer identified with a
representation through the making of an appropriate image , but consists in the presentation of the
object chosen by the artist. Better known realism artist are Ricard Cesar , Danial Spoerri , Martial
Raysse and Jean Tinguely.
Classical Realism
Classical Realism is the most controversial issue in Art today. The term has taken on a much more precise
meaning in the early years of the Twenty-First Century. Up until this time it vaguely meant artists who worked
in a more "traditional" manner. However it has recently begun to be used in a crucially different way - to identify
a distinctive if widely geographically disparate group of artist who openly dispute the view of Art History promulgated
by Modern Movement Critics of the Twentieth Century. This new wave of artists often cite as their inspiration the
Academic Classical artists of the 1800s, the painters and sculptors most despised and ignored by the official status
quo of the Twentieth Century. Classical Realism is not a reaction within the Modern Movement (like, say Pop Art or
Abstract Expressionism) - it is an extremely conscious and radical act of rebellion against the entire prevailing
orthodoxy of Modernism itself. It is an alternative Modern Art.
